anti-inflammatory shot ingredients including ginger turmeric and lemon juice

Ginger Lemon Tumeric Shot Recipe

I want to be honest with you guys. There is something about a tiny little shot glass that is filled with this bright, golden liquid that always makes me feel like I have my life together. I know it might sound dramatic. But please hear me out. The first time I tried a ginger lemon turmeric shot, I remember this one Saturday morning standing in a farmers market, exhausted slightly behind everything, and someone decided to hand me a sample.

One sip and I was completely sold. It has that combination of sharp ginger heat, citrusy brightness and earthy turmeric hit in a way that felt almost electric. This woke me up way better than my second cup of coffee ever does.

Ever since I have been making my own at home and let me be honest, it became one of my favorite little rituals. And it takes only five minutes and the ingredients are almost in my kitchen and the way it makes me feel in the morning is absolutely worth every second.

If you are one of the curious ones about adding ginger lemon turmeric shots to your routine then this post is definitely for you. I will walk you through everything. Why these shots work, the best recipe, and how to make a big batch, and how to customize it to your own taste.

Why are these shots having a moment

Over the last few years wellness culture has shifted so much. I remember a time when healthy habits felt like a checklist of deprivation, “cut out that, give up this, drink something green that tastes like a lawn. The conversation has changed and I’m here for it.  People want rituals that actually feel good and also grounded in real ingredients and that do not require a wellness budget size of a monthly care payment.

This is exactly why anti-inflammatory shots like this are exploding in popularity. They are at every juice bar, in the grab and go section at whole foods and all over Pinterest boards dedicated to morning routines. And here is the thing they are genuinely not just a trend. Ginger lemon and turmeric have centuries of use behind them. They are not super foods that appeared on a shelf last year.

These are pantry staples with serious staying power, and when you combine them. You are going to get something that tastes bold, feels purposeful and that is genuinely going to make you feel good.

I have seen a lot of shot styled in the most beautiful way: Little amber glass bottles that are lined up on a marble counter, a tray of golden shots surrounded by fresh sliced lemons and whole turmeric root, in a tiny shot glass that is beside a steaming mug of tea first thing in the morning.

There is something that is visually beautiful about these ingredients. The papery skin of ginger roots, deep golden yellow, the vivid citrus of a freshly halved lemon. This is the kind of thing that is going to make your kitchen counter feel like a wellness heaven just by sitting there.

The ginger lemon turmeric shot

Let me share my own version. It is bold yet not aggressive, it is bright yet balanced and it has enough sweetness to make it pleasant to drink without dulling all that good heat and sharpness.

Ingredients for 4 to 6 shots.

  • 2 inch piece of fresh ginger rot, peeled
  • One teaspoon grounded turmeric or you can use one inch piece of fresh turmeric root peeled
  • Juice of 2 large lemons this is about ¼ cup
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • One table spoon of raw honey this is optional yet highly recommended
  • ½ cup filtered water, you can adjust for consistency

Tools

  • You will need a high powered blender or a juicer
  • Fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag
  • Small pitcher or jar storage
  • Shot glasses

Instructions

Step 1 : Prep your ingredients. You must peel and roughly chop your ginger. If you are using fresh turmeric roots instead of ground you need to peel that too. Using fresh turmeric will give you a brighter, earthier flavor and even more vibrant color.

Step 2: Blend. Into your blender add the turmeric, ginger, lemon juice, black pepper, honey( if you are using honey) and water to your blender. For about 30 to 45 seconds on high you can then blend the mixture  and until everything is completely broken down and the liquid looks smooth and deeply golden.

Step 3 : Strain. The mixture must be poured through a fine mesh strainer or a nut milk bag into a jar or pitcher. Press firmly with the back of a spoon to make sure every drop is squeezed out. The pulp must be discarded or if you want a bonus you add it to a smoothie or a marinate if you do not want to waste it.

Step 4: Taste and adjust. You need to take a small sip before you bottle it. Want more heat? If yes, add some more ginger. Too sharp?  Then you can add a small drizzle of honey that will mellow it out beautifully.

Step 5: Pour and enjoy. Take your shot glasses and divide into them and drink immediately, Alternatively transfer to a glass jar and refrigerate.

Ingredients breakdown: What each one does.

You need to understand what each ingredient is here. This is what makes this recipe feel even more intentional. And to be honest knowing what  you are putting into your body is part of what makes a habit stick.

Ginger

Ginger is definitely the backbone of this shot. It is sharp, warming and slightly spicy and it brings a level of intensity that wakes your senses up immediately. Looking beyond the taste, ginger is valued for its digestive support properties and its naturally warm qualities. It also has a bioactive compound that is called gingerol. It gives it that heat characteristics, and this is why ginger is used in traditional medicine practices around the world for generations.

If you are going to use ginger for this recipe, Fresh ginger is always the better option than dried one. use firm, smooth pieces without too much wrinkling, The younger the ginger, the less fibrous and the more juice you will get from it.

Turmeric

This is why the shot has its iconic golden color. It has a slightly earthy, and almost musky flavor that pairs absolutely beautifully with the brightness of lemon and the sharpness of ginger. There are active compounds in turmeric that are curcumin, which is what a lot of people refer to when they are talking about turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

Here is something very important to note : curcumin is fat soluble and has a low bioavailability on its own, and this is why black pepper is so crucial in this recipe.  The piperrine in black pepper is important as it significantly enhances the curcumin absorption.  A small pinch makes a very big difference, it is very important not to skip it.

Both fresh turmeric root and ground turmeric work in this recipe. For a slightly more vibrant complex flavor and gorgeous deeper color use fresh root. For convenience yet effectiveness use ground turmeric.

Lemon

Here, lemon is the brightest. lemon is going to lift all the heavier, earthier   notes of the ginger and turmeric and will make the whole shot feel alive and fresh. Just adding lemon juice is a great source of vitamin C, which will support immune function, and acidity helps balance the flavor profile of the shot beautifully. Fresh lemon juice is always the best. Using bottled lemon juice will not give you the same brightness or nutritional quality and the flavor  is noticeably flatter. This is definitely one of the recipes where fresh makes a real and obvious difference.

Black Pepper

Mighty yet small, as I previously mentioned, black pepper’s piperine content helps your body actually use the curcumin from turmeric. You will not not taste the pepper at all. Just a faint warmth yet it  is definitely doing important work behind the scenes.

Raw Honey

Like I said honey is optional but I genuinely love it here. Honey is going to round out the sharpness without masking any of the good stuff, raw honey also has its own sets of beneficial properties. For a lovely upgrade use manuka honey if you have it. Bear in mind if you are going completely sugar free please leave the honey out and do not include it in your recipe. The Shot will still taste delicious, it just has a bit more of an aggressive edge.

Making a big batch for the week

four bottles of homemade ginger lemon turmeric shots on marble surface with fresh ginger

Well this is one of the most common questions people ask me about wellness recipes like this one. They always ask : can I bulk make it? And the answer is of course you can. In fact I highly recommend it because it is what keeps this habit alive for most people, myself included.

You can multiply the recipe by 4 or 5 to make a full week’s worth.  You can store the finished shots in a small glass jar or a sealed glass bottle in the refrigerator. They are going to keep well for up to five to seven days.

Let me share a few tips for batch success.

  • Use a larger blender and do not over fill the blend in two rounds if needed.
  • label your jar you do not want to guess how old it is, so label your jar with the dates you made
  • Shake or stir before each serving you need need to shake because the mixture I’ll naturally settle and separate in the fridge
  • Pre-pour into individual shot bottles. This is for the grab and go in the mornings and is very convenient. Find yourself those little 2 ounce amber glass bottles on Amazon. They are perfect for this, and they look absolutely gorgeous lined up in the fridge door.

Ways to customize your shot

That you have made the base recipe a couple of times, you will definitely start to feel comfortable riffing on it. Here are some of my favorite variations and t I love.

Add cayenne pepper. A tiny  pinch of cayenne is going to take the heat level up a notch and will give that extra metabolic kick. Starting with just a small pinch a little goes a long way

Add orange juice. More a little more warmth and sweetness, swap half the lemon juice for fresh orange juice. This is a nice variation for days when you want something with a more gentle touch

Add apple cider vinegar adding a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar will add another layer of gut health support and a pleasantly tangy complexity. The shot will feel more functional.

Add  a pinch of cinnamon Cinnamon will add warmth and a slightly sweet spiced note that works beautifully with the turmeric. It has its own wellness benefits. This is definitely a winning addition

Make it a warm tonic instead of that cold shot. Blend everything, then gently reheat in a small saucepan. Adding a little extra water and sipping as a morning tonic tea. This is one of my favorite cozy morning rituals during the colder months.

Tips for making the best anti-inflammatory shots

Here are a few things I have learned from making these regularly:

  • Always wear an apron or gloves when handling fresh turmeric. Your fingers and cutting board will be stained  with impressive speed and stubbornness.  I have previously lost my white dish towel to turmeric and I really do not recommend it.
  • Do not skip the straining step. The pulp will make the shot grainy and very hard to drink quickly. A smooth shot is always a pleasant shot
  • Drink on an empty stomach  if you can. Most wellness practitioners suggest and recommend taking these shots in the morning before to maximize absorption.
  • Follow it with a glass of water this will ensure that the ingredients are carried though your system and is just a good morning habit anyway.
  • Be consistent. These shots will work best as a daily or near daily habit, rather than an occasional thing. Now think of it like a supplement, and not a cure.

Fitting this into your wellness routine

Good habits always stick when they have a home. A context. And a ritual around them. This shot definitely works beautifully as part of a morning routine. You want to make it easy enough that you will actually do it daily.

This is my current morning set up : I usually take my shot straight out of the fridge right after waking up, this is before I turn on my coffee maker, this is so that by the time it brews , my shot has done its thing and I am ready to actually taste and enjoy my coffee without it just being a vehicle for caffeine delivery

If your mornings are chaotic, you can prepare everything the night before. You can portion your shots into individual containers and then line them up in the fridge, from here onward all you do is grab and go. Remove all that friction if you want to build a new habit

There are some people that their immunity booster drinks  in the afternoon instead, and especially when they feel a cold coming on or when stress has been high. That works too. This shot does not belong to any specific time of day. It just belongs in your daily routine.

Storage and Shelf life

Usually fresh ginger lemon turmeric shots can last up to five to seven days in the refrigerator when it is stored in a sealed glass container. My recommendation is using glass instead of plastic for anything containing turmeric. This is because turmeric will stain plastic containers over time ( even BPA free ones)

If you want longer storage, freeze your shots in an ice cube tray. Once it has been frozen, pop the cubes into a freezer bag and keep them for up to three months. Take out one the night before and let it thaw in the fridge overnight, or you can leave it on the counter for about 20 minutes before drinking it.

For someone with a busy life frozen shots are a great option or if you like to batch cook in large quantities.

Frequently asked questions

What does a ginger lemon turmeric shot taste like? This shot tastes bold and complex and in the best possible way. You get that strong ginger heat that you can feel at the back of your throat, a warm slightly earthy undertone from turmeric and a bright citrus tang from the lemon.

The honey will. Soften everything just enough to make it pleasantly drinkable. It’s bright, sharp, warming and surprisingly very addictive once you get used to it.

How often should I drink a ginger lemon turmeric shot? One shot per day on an empty stomach is recommended. However consistency is way more important than frequency. Meaning that one shot taken daily will definitely do more for you than three shots taken sporadically. With that said, these shots are made entirely from food based ingredients, so we don’t have a hard rule . You just need to listen to your body.

Is it safe to drink while I am pregnant or breastfeeding? It is best that you consult your Healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you add anything concentrated like this to your routine. High amounts of ginger is considered safe in food. It’s best if you get personalized guidance.

Is it the same as an immune booster drink? Absolutely, terms are often interchangeable. Because of the combination of anti-inflammatory, vitamin c rich and antioxidants ingredients, this hunger lemon turmeric shot is one of the most popular and well known immunity booster drinks. Other immunity booster drinks might include zinc, elderberry or Echinacea, but this ginger turmeric lemon combination is definitely among the most accessible and delicious

Can I use a blender to make it? Of course. If you have a juicer, you can run the ginger and fresh turmeric root through it, then whisk in your lemon juice, honey and black pepper. If you do not have a juicer or blender, use ground turmeric and ground ginger mixed directly with lemon juice and water. It won’t be as fresh or potent but it does still work and still tasted good

Why does my ginger lemon turmeric shot separate in the fridge? Segregation is perfectly normal and expected. This is because there is no emulsifier that is holding the mixture together, the denser ingredients settle to the  bottom over time. All it needs is a good shake or a good stir before drinking and you are all set.

In-conclusion

The Best thing about this ginger lemon turmeric shot is that it feels like a genuine act of care. And not in a restrictive, punishing way. Not in an expensive, complicated way. It is just a small deliberate five minute ritual that says I am paying attention to how I feel and I definitely want to feel good.

Wellness does not have to be overwhelming or complicated sometimes. All it takes is a glass of something golden and sharp that will always wake you up. Makes you feel alive and that will make you start your day with intention. That is the whole philosophy behind this recipe and I can endlessly talk about it.

When you make this recipe I really hope you will love it a s much as I do. First start with the base recipe and see how your body responds, then make it your own, if you are brave add the cayenne. Try the warm tonic version on a cold morning. You can batch a whole week’s worth on Sunday and actually follow through with your morning ritual. This will be surprisingly the one thing you look forward to when your alarm goes off.

This golden little shot is waiting for you.
